St. Margaret’s Chapel and the Magdalene Almshouses
Glastonbury is a legendary landscape that touches the soul and speaks to the heart. We will begin the day by visiting one of Glastonbury’s hidden gems. Dating back to the 11th century, when Glastonbury was a major pilgrimage destination, a healing hospital for men with a chapel paid for by Queen Margaret of Scotland was built. In the 16th century, two rows of Almshouses replaced the hospital which can be visited today. It is like stepping back to medieval England! The beautiful gardens are quiet and peaceful.
The chapel of St. Margaret and the Almshouses are a unique insight into England’s historical past.
Next, we will visit the wonderful, atmospheric and ruinous Glastonbury Abbey.
Legends claim that Joseph of Arimathea travelled to Glastonbury and planted his staff into Weary-all hill that miraculously turned into the Holy Thorn.
Joseph was said to have built the first church of Christendom in the abbey grounds, built of timber and daub wattle, it has is long gone. It was said to have 12 circular cells.
